My Journey Continues: The Second GIC Assessment

Hello everyone, it’s me again, and I’m back with another update on my journey through the Gender Identity Clinic (GIC). If you’ve been following my previous blog posts, you know that attending the first zoom assessment was a significant step for me—one that left me feeling both excited and anxious about what’s to come. Now, I’m thrilled to share with you my experience with the second assessment that took place on 30th November 2022 with the wonderful Dr. Gurleen Bhatia.

Prior to the zoom meeting, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions. The first assessment with Dr. McGregor-Johnson had gone relatively well, and I was grateful for her warm demeanour and understanding nature. Still, the second meeting presented new uncertainties, and my nerves were playing havoc with my mind once again. The night before the assessment, anticipation kept me from getting any sleep. However, I decided to make good use of the time and laid out my clothes, hoping it would bring some semblance of control over the situation. I opted for my grey polka-dot jumper and black skinny jeans, but as tiredness set in, I crawled back into bed, my mind still racing.

As the hours ticked by, the upcoming assessment weighed heavily on my mind, I got back out of bed and stress-eating seemed to be my coping mechanism. By the time the virtual meeting began, I was battling severe tiredness and heightened nerves. However, Dr. Gurleen Bhatia’s kind smile and her explanation that this assessment would be more educational than a series of questions offered some comfort. there was still a series of what appears to be routine questions such as address, date of birth, am I in a comfortable and safe space and such.

The conversation flowed naturally as we revisited the goals set during the first assessment. Dr. Gurleen Bhatia discussed the weight goal in great detail, taking the time to explain the science behind the upcoming HRT medications and various options available. the stress eating before the meeting did play on my mind at this point. Although I struggled to grasp some of the medical jargon, she kindly broke things down into simpler terms, ensuring I understood the possibilities ahead.

The discussion then flowed into Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), a topic that intrigued and overwhelmed me in equal measure. Dr. Gurleen Bhatia covered various types of HRT, including gels, patches, oral, and injections, as well as blockers, orchidectomy and other options. She provided examples, pros, and cons of each, which helped me gain a clearer understanding.

Despite my exhaustion, the sense of importance surrounding this assessment seemed to grant me a temporary burst of energy. As the assessment neared its end, we looked towards the next steps in my journey. Dr. Gurleen Bhatia explained that she would compile her notes, and the assessment would be sent to my GP and email for reference. She estimated this process would take around three weeks.

Following this, I was advised to book a blood test that meets the requirements specified in the documentation. Once the blood tests are conducted and sent for testing, it would take approximately 2-3 weeks for the results, provided there are no complications. The prospect of starting HRT treatment within a week of receiving the results filled me with immense joy, as I’ve long considered HRT to be a pivotal step in my journey.

Knowing that the commencement of HRT is now within reach fills me with hope and excitement. Although I understand that my journey encompasses more than just this one step, it represents a significant milestone for me. With the meeting coming to an end and thanking each other, the additional information and excitement on my mind I crawled back into bed and slept for many uninterrupted hours.

I’ll continue to share my experiences in this blog and can’t wait to bring you along every step of my journey.

Thank you for your unwavering support, and until next time,

Kaydee
