Asserting My Identity: Changing My Name at Work

Diary Update:

After receiving my deed poll documents, the first thing I did the next day was write a cover letter to my boss, Tim, informing him and the company of my name change. Enclosed in the letter was a copy of the deed poll and a request to update all documentation, including payroll documents.

At the time, I didn’t fully realize the impact that this decision would have. I knew that changing my name with my employer was necessary, but I didn’t anticipate the domino effect that it would cause. Suddenly, I found myself needing to update my name with banks, HMRC, and many other organizations much faster than I had planned.

Despite the unexpected challenges, I felt a sense of pride and empowerment in taking this step. By asserting my identity and making it official, I was taking control of my life and affirming my right to be who I am.

Shortly after sending the cover letter to my boss, Tim, I received verbal confirmation from him that my name change had been processed. This was a huge relief and a breath of fresh air, as the anticipation of a response had been causing my mind to run wild with worry and anxiety.

When I wrote the cover letter to my boss, Tim, informing him of my name change, I made sure to reassure him that I would remain professional and continue to adhere to the company’s dress code. I wanted to ease any concerns that the company may have had about my transition, and to make it clear that I was still the same person, just with a different name.

In the letter, I explained that I was committed to maintaining a professional demeanor and that I would continue to wear work-appropriate clothing. I wanted to make it clear that my transition would not affect my job performance, and that I was still fully committed to the company and its values.

For anyone who may be considering a similar step, I encourage you to be honest and open about your needs and concerns. It may not always be easy, but it is important to stand up for ourselves and assert our rights as individuals. Together, we can work towards a world that is more understanding and compassionate towards those who are different.
